Dear Tweeters,

Today (5-15-2011) was a good day to dodge raindrops and go birding in Skagit County. Here are some highlights.

LEWIS'S WOODPECKER: one was still there at Martin Road near Rockport, although the Vesper Sparrow of Friday is long gone. Thanks to Ryan and Randy for letting folks know about the birds here.

DUSKY FLYCATCHER: practically the first bird I saw at Martin Road!

LARK SPARROW: Josh Parrott saw and photographed one in Mt Vernon today, near the YMCA, but the bird did not linger in the pouring rain.

Good birds at the pond at the east end of Burmaster Road included a female Yellow-headed Blackbird, three female RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 2 breeding-plumage EARED GREBES.

Whimbrel were lingering on the Gardner Road.

18 Long-billed Dowitchers were at a puddle near the east end of Maiben Road.

At Cockreham Island was a late Western Meadowlark.

At my yard near were all six species of swallows.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
