Yesterday early evening (~6 pm) we watched a pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers (Audubon) working through our yard. We've had one or two before, but always in our or the neighbor's large shrubs and trees -- this time the pair spent the whole time down on the lawn or the (still mostly bare) vegetable garden beds. At one point the male ducked and burrowed for a run up the row under the arching radish leaves. The only perching I observed was when he spent a few moments on one of the lower rungs of our (sidelined still) monster tomato cages. This male had the most extensive yellow cap I've ever seen on one of these birds, and, along with the extensive yellow below his chin, had simply wonderful, vibrant markings and color. Just beautiful, and a treat to see them so clearly out in in the open.
