I spent the last 3 days in Franklin County, helping my wife with a botany
survey in the Juniper Dunes Wilderness. We camped at Windust Park.
Highlights:

LEWIS'S WOODPECKER - At 9:00 a.m. Monday, and again at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, we
saw a Lewis's Woodpecker at the Juniper Dunes Ranch buildings, near the end
of Joy Rd, near the north access to the Wilderness. I think this bird
might be chaseable. From Pasco-Kahlotus Rd., go east on Snake River Rd.
then left on Blackman Ridge Rd., and left again onto Joy. Also, last night
we briefly saw *another* Lewis's Woodpecker at Windust Park, but it
disappeared quickly.

SHORT-EARED OWL - We had 3 separate sightings on Monday, May 16th. Two of
the birds were on Delaney Rd., and the third was on Largent Rd. Both of
these roads are on the cut-off route between Connell and Windust, just a bit
south of SR-260. We were there around 6:30 pm.

Juniper Dunes Wilderness had a fairly small species count, with COMMON
RAVEN, HORNED LARK, LARK SPARROW, and WESTERN MEADOWLARK as the most common
birds seen. Other species noted there included LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE with
babies, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, CHIPPING SPARROW, HERMIT THRUSH, and BULLOCK'S
ORIOLE.

Windust was fairly active with migrants, especially last night and this
morning. Birds included:

Osprey 17-May-11
Eurasian Collared-Dove 17-May-11
Vaux's Swift 17-May-11
Dusky Flycatcher 18-May-11
Cassin's Vireo 17-May-11
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Townsend's Solitaire 17-May-11
Hermit Thrush 18-May-11 - many
Townsend's Warbler 17-May-11
Wilson's Warbler 18-May-11
Western Tanager
Chipping Sparrow 16-May-11
