When I left our West Seattle house in the morning yesterday, I had a downy woodpecker, which always makes me smile, but when I got home in the evening, I had to do a double-take when I saw the pileated clinging to the outer cage of the feeder and hammering at the suet block. That was a first. Between him and the flickers, I'm going to go through a lot of suet.

He ended up on the battered little flat stump in my yard. The feeder seemed like easier pickings to me, plus it's off the ground, but he spent enough time at the stump for me to grab the camera and take some photos (happy to send them if anyone wants one).
