On Friday, a visit to Wanapum State Park produced two LEOW, one adult and
one branching fuzz ball in a ponderosa pine about 50 feet from the nest
tree. The nest itself was a sad sight - one of the young LEOW must have
fallen out of the nest within the past week and died struggling to free
itself from the branches that prevented it from falling to the ground.

The other youngster appears quite healthy.

An initial search of the area did not produce any LEOW. It was only after
sitting down to lunch when a "yap -yap -yap" the second time woke my senses
up that it was a LEOW calling. I had been looking at an RV, complete with
satellite dish, grill and lap dog directly in front of me, and assumed that
the "yap yap yap" had come from the dog. Don't know why an adult would call
during the day, but I suspect it had a time Friday night and Saturday night
with all the camping spots on a reserved status..I would not have found
either the adult or the youngster had the adult not called. I had searched
the very tree previously, and checked the ground beneath for pellets and
whitewash without success.
