Thanks, Joe, for bringing this up - I've been meaning to look this up,
but, procrastinated.

I and others have noticed nightly activity, seemingly year-round, of
Killdeer (from 2 to a dozen or so), in the field area at Magnuson Park
between the old firehouse tower and the Seattle Musical Theatre.
Recently, some of the activity seems to be like courtship displays, or
maybe secret rituals of a bird cult of some kind! They are active for
hours (maybe all night) and, when I've been there before sunrise,
Killdeer are often calling out even before the crows come in. They
have to sleep sometime... And what do they eat? Maybe there are
insects out at night (all year?) that they go for.

If no one responds on Tweeters, I will be forced to do some research
myself. :-)
