TSA would never say why we couldn't take it, even though it used to be ok to put tripods into packs. I think it is a "potential weapon" issue, though. (Have you ever unscrewed the handle from your tripos? I could do some serious damage with that!) Interestingly to me, about half the time I pack the tripod in my duffel, I have one of those notes saying TSA has opened the bag for inspection. There is nothing else "dramatic" in there, so I am imagining the tripod is what causes the inspections.

It's probably a safety factor. Tripods would be more likely to move around and hit things (or people) if the plane does something weird.
