Subject: [Tweeters] Snowy Owl at Ocean Shores-the story on my retraction of

Tweeters,

While admiring the King Eider at Ocean Shores yesterday, I scoped north
along the embayment. I caught sight of a distant SNOWY OWL. I watched it for
15 seconds or so, until I was quite sure I saw it swivel its head. Then I
phoned George Gerdts to possibly get the word out to Tweeterdom, which he
did. Wanting a better look, I started the walk north. Fifteen minutes later
I again looked for the owl but could only find a whitish owl-shaped blob of
driftwood. Was I mistaken? As Ellen was away on a conference, I was alone to
ponder that age-old question many birders have faced "what really did I
see?" I don't think so, but, rather than have folks drive out there only to
be disappointed I decided to retract my sighting which Denny Granstrand
kindly posted to Tweeters that evening.

Today, reading reports on Tweeters of bona fide Snowy Owls at Ocean Shores
renews my confidence that I really saw what I thought I saw.
