Tweeters,
Just yesterday I asked myself why I was bothering to look through the yard sparrows so late in the year for something new. Everyday it's just Juncos, Golden-crowned, Song and House Sparrows with an occasional White-crowned. While walking the dog in the rain this morning, I thought I glimpsed a sparrow with a black throat and a black crown in the driveway. Maybe it was a just House Sparrow with wethead, but I kept looking until I got another brief look. I saw that it had a golden brown cheek and some streaking on the breast. I spread some seed near the house and waited for the groundfeeders to find it. Eventually, Kevin and I got good looks at a first winter HARRIS'S SPARROW. I don't know if there were two in the yard or I was just mistaken about the black throat on the first sighting.
