Today I was out rambling with students in Lord Hill Park. I ended up
bringing up the rear because just as I was rolling up a survey tape, and the
students were hiking out, I was suddenly surrounded by a band of several
kinglets, all flitting about very close at hand and none of them higher than
my head. I was suddenly in the middle of a flock of birds who foraged about
as if I were a local tree. There is something very magical about being able
to observe birds so close at hand, I could feel the air from the flutter of
their wings on my cheek. My only regret was all the students were down the
trail and missed it entirley and I had to run to catch up with the pack.
