There was a large push of migrants underway this morning near Scatter Ck.
just east of Tenino, along Mull St. and Old Military Rd. SE. I also bumped
into Paul Hicks birding along Mull, and we were both amazed at the birds on
hand. There were large numbers of Golden-crowned and White-crowned
sparrows, plus some Lincoln's, Savannah, and quite a few Sooty Fox Sparrows
and juncos. Both Myrtle and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Yellow
Warbler, a Cassin's Vireo, Varied Thrushes, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Evening
Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings, hundreds of Violet-green Swallows with a few
Vaux's Swifts among them, and flocks of robins. Seen from the bridge on
Mull: Green Heron, Sora, and Merlin. A flock of 10 or so Snow Geese flew
over, first Paul or I have ever noted locally. Altogether, one of the most
impressive migratory movements I've seen locally.
