Birding up the Skagit River the past two days was incredible, with
hundreds and hundreds of migrants passing through. Highlights
included a female INDIGO BUNTING yesterday near the last trees near
the north end of Sauk Prairie Road. I tried to refind it this morning
with no luck, but instead found a female RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, my first
Northern Shrike of the fall, heard a few BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS (also one
Cedar), a Vesper Sparrow, and three Chipping Sparrows. Yesterday a
Lapland Longpur flew over the baseball field in Marblemount. An adult
Herring Gull was at Howard Miller Steelhead Park. Today there was a
SAY'S PHOEBE and two Yellow-headed Blackbirds at Corkindale. Single
Wilson's Warblers both days and a few Common Yellowthroats. One snipe
seen in flight while migrating down the river. Hundreds of American
Robins, Savannah Sparrows and Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows around
both days.

The Sandhill Crane from Monday was still at the Hayton Reserve this
afternoon. There were also about 500 Snow Geese including one adult
Blue Goose, 225 Greater White-fronted Geese, and 40 Taverner's
Cackling Geese.

Good birding,
Ryan Merrill
