There has been a MUTE SWAN at the Steigerwald Lake NWR, in Clark County, since arriving on Feb. 6, 2006 with a small flock of Tundra Swans. During the extreme cold east winds that we get in the Gorge during the winter he disappears during the periods when the water freezes over but returns after it thaws out. We believe the swan to be a male from his display behavior in the Spring, the locals call him Lonesome George. He was extremely wary the first couple of years and stayed in a pond furthest from any people but now will come within a hundred feet of the walking trail. Today, I stopped by the Franz Lake NWR in Skamania County, and counted 19 TUNDRA SWANS on the lake, the first arrivals for this fall. Water levels are low on the lake and the swans were standing in the Wapato patches. Wilson Cady
