Hi Tweets,

I thought it was interesting that Dennis Paulson has not seen any crickets or katydids in his part of Seattle. In my neighborhood near Fauntleroy (SW part of the city) I?always see?a species of green katydid around the porchlights in late summer/early fall. They just started showing up about 2-3 weeks ago at most.

Also, while my S.O. and I were walking on a warm evening about a week ago we heard a "cricket" calling in our neighborhood. I assumed it was a cricket that had hitchhiked here in somebody's camping gear after an eastern Washington trip or something. Now I wonder if it could've been the katydids? I haven't heard any calling around my house where they are fairly common though, so perhaps not.

I never saw a katydid in the 30+ years I lived in Renton, so either they are a new species around here or they're just very local. I believe Jeff Gibson mentioned seeing them in West Seattle many years ago, so maybe they are peculiar to this area - better than the rats that we're also known for around here.
