Hi,
I had brief but good views of a BROAD-WINGED HAWK at Neah Bay, Clallam
County on Sunday.

Small Buteo (much smaller than Red-tailed) with stiff wings and fast
wingbeat. Neat black primary edging below, and dark less distinct secondary
edging. Mostly translucent primaries - more extensive, 'rectangular' and not
crescent-like (cf Red-shouldered). Secondaries finely barred, underwing
coverts dark tipped, breast streaked. No dark fore edge to wing and no belly
patch. Wing shape very unlike Red-shouldered with no secondary 'bulge', and
more pointed wingtip. Wings held almost flat in glide with tips of longest
two (?) primaries raised a little. I didn't see anything distinctive on the
tail other than that it was Buteo and not Accipiter proportioned.

More heavily marked below than Sibley illustrations, but exactly like the
'juv september' photo in Stokes.

I rather thought that the glide was flat-winged rather than droop winged -
not sure what to make of that.
