Since we are talking about Ospreys, I thought I would bring up
another interesting behavior.
Last Saturday we still had some of the unseasonably hot weather, with
temperatures reaching into the mid-80s in Shelton, where I live.
About midday, Karen and I watched as an Osprey dove from a perch
right in front of our house into Fawn Lake. This was not a predatory
dive, and when the Osprey went into the lake, just below the tree, it
spread its wings out as if to make sure they were thoroughly wet.
Then it took off.
Then it returned to the same branch, and dove down to the water again
in the same manner. Then it did it a third time, and this time I was
prepared with a camera and long lens, so I was able to capture the
behavior, though I haven't posted the photos yet.
Cooling off? Bathing? Drowning parasites? We weren't sure.
Once again, nature provided a surprise.
