Here is something I have never seen before: a knock-down-drag-out brawl
between two *Great Blue Heron*s at Shilshole Marina this afternoon (9/24).
Loud splashing and big wings flapping, drew our attention to two herons
fighting in the water of a basin about the middle of the marina. They were
grabbing each others neck and pushing the opponents head under water in an
apparent attempt to drown each other. The brawl appeared to be quite
vicious. Finally one of them broke loose and took flight. The winner was
actually swimming in the water and after a short rest, swung itself up on
the dock, were it shook of the water and started preening. Quite a sight to
watch!
