I stopped by the Dick Gilmur Memorial Shoreline Public Access turn out along 509 Marine View Drive in northeast Tacoma to view the log booms, and our friend the Black-tailed Gull was easily seen roosting on the near booms along with California Gull, Thayer's Gull and Glaucous-winged Gull between 2p-3p. Just slightly smaller then the California Gull, the Black-Tailed gull has a darker gray mantle, brighter yellow legs, a sooty nape that is less streaked then the California, a white forehead, two light orbital crescents above and below the yellow eye, a yellow green bill with a black and red tip, and the distinctive black subterminal tail band.
