As for little ole me, I was furious, thinking it was class warfare against us poor birders. I even downloaded many of my eBird lists. Then it dawned on me that I fell for an April fools joke.

Budget Cuts Force Changes in the Lab for Ornithology

March 30, 2012 ? As is true of many institutions of higher learning,
Cornell University has been obliged to cope with significant budgetary
short-falls over the last few years. Dwindling grant support from
state and federal agencies coupled with increasing competition from
on-line institutions like the University of Phoenix and DeVry
University have made it necessary for Cornell to reduce funding to
many programs and to discontinue others entirely. These budget cuts
will affect services provided by the Lab for Ornithology.

Effective April 2, 2012, non-fee based on-line programs including
Project Feeder Watch, Nest Watch and eBird will be taken off line and
will no longer be available. Fees for online access to "Birds of
North America" will be increased from the current $42.00 per year to
$600.00 per year. The on-line database "All About Birds" will become
subscription only at $45.00 per year.

The Lab for Ornithology will be continuing its important work related
to the rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, thanks, in part, to
continued support through the USFWS from monies mandated in 2007. We
have also teamed with the Discovery Channel to produce a reality-based
investigative series titled "Ghost Bird Hunters". We hope this
program will attract a new and younger audience to the field of
ornithology.

We deeply regret the reduction in functionality for users who visit
the Lab for Ornithology on-line, but we must accept economic realities
so that we may focus on those programs that generate significant
funding. We invite you to tune in to "Ghost Bird Hunters" beginning
8:00pm EDT, April 13, 2012 on the Discovery Channel.
