As a native Californian, now transplanted Washingtonian, who happily
discovered birding out of desperation while living the past 18 years in
Alabama, I have my favorite bird songs as ring tones and alarms on my
cell phone. Swainson's (Hermit?) Thrush songs, besides being beautiful,
remind me of childhood days in the hills around Santa Cruz, CA and are
reserved for my wife and daughter. All other callers are announced by
the barking of a Barred Owl (hoot owl to Southerners). (Barred Owls
were common enough in our Mobile yard that our Amazon parrot does a
credible and hilarious Barred Owl imitation.) My wake-up alarm is a
Carolina Wren song, a ubiquitous and joyous part of the Mobile, AL bird
chorus. My question is, what birds songs (calls) do Washingtonians
(native and naturalized) associate with your beautiful state?
