Despite rain and cold we had two very exciting sightings at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center.

The first was a Common Loon on the Rattlesnake Lake, seen from the viewing platform at the Education Center. I did not actually see the Loon, but a colleague told me she had. Every year about this time they show up in the lake (which coincides nicely with WDFW stocking trout). Then eventually they move onto Chester Morse Lake to nest.

The second sighting I witnessed directly. A Rufous Hummingbird zoomed right at the purple shirtsleeve peaking out from my ranger uniform. I must say that woke me up better than my morning coffee! But it was a good feeling to know they are returning. They are usually frequent visitors to the center grounds during spring and summer.
