Hello All,
Concern has been expressed recently regarding the safety of banding of
American Dippers on a project on the Olympic Peninsula. Banding dippers is
a completely safe monitoring technique that has been used on a variety of
projects. Most notably has been a mult-year project near Chilliwack, BC
(just east of Vancouver) that has banded several hundred dippers without any
problems to the birds or causing nest abandonment or hatching failure. Bird
banders always consider the safety and well-being of the birds first, and
are quick to stop using techniques that might cause problems to the birds
they are studying. Examining how birds respond to the restoration of a
river, through the banding and monitoring of populations, can provide
valuable information about the quality of the restoration and if the project
is achieving its goals. I wish the researchers working on the project all
the best with their work. I've included a link below on one of the papers to
