Subject: [Tweeters] Bird Banding - debate continues

It's possible that a banded bird can die from being banded (i.e., getting the band caught on a branch, etc.), but to say that all banded birds die because they are banded is ludicrous. Birds die for all kinds of reasons: predation by hawks, cats, etc.; disease; collisions into towers or buildings; extreme weather. This can happen to any bird whether it is banded or not.

So if every person that bands a bird can account for all the birds where a bouts, then they should do so, otherwise those missing birds have died because of being banded, only the lucky survive. And that is an absolute fact!
