Very enjoyable video, especially when you think about the time when it was
made and how much has changed. The legacy of protection of natural resources
is something we should all remember Dan Evans and Mike Lowry (and Steve
Herman and others) for. I fairly often tell people what's being done with
Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program dollars and how Dan Evans and
Mike Lowry were so instrumental in getting the program established. I just
got back from Bowerman, well, yesterday. The birds just weren't there. I
found out I should have stayed on the Beach at Ocean shores instead of
heading for Bowerman during the high tide cycle. Oh well, maybe I'll get it
right next time. I did watch one distant "ball" of sandpipers, when I first
got to the end of the boardwalk that comprises the Sandpiper Trail. A
Peregrine was flying around the birds though I didn't see it stoop.
Interestingly, when I queried "Bowerman Basin 1981" on Youtube, I not only
got the video Steve mentioned (with the Vivaldi accompaniment) but I also
got one titled, "Snowy Plovers swarming", an interesting title for sure. The
guy taking the video is exclaiming about the flashing colors of the wheeling
ball of birds. You can see, in a couple of places in the video, a falcon
stooping and chasing. I suspect the observers weren't even aware of that
little drama going on.

Check it out.
