Hope this isn't too far off topic since it involves an Alaskan bird - but
who knows, maybe this bird winters here. I was glancing through pictures I
took last July in the Chiswell Islands, Alaska (off the Kenai Peninsula)
and came across this odd bird in one photo. I can't i.d. it for the life
of me. At first it strikes me as a crow, then the beak and head shape and
thick legs don't match up, not to mention the rather crowless habitat. Also
note the inconspicuous white line on the side of its head. The beak
doesn't seem to match a rhinoceros auklet -- it's much smaller and
thinner. Anyone have an idea? Cropped very small, the photo quality is
pretty poor.
