Subject: [Tweeters] Seattle sapsucker update

Hello, tweets.

I watched our birch tree on and off today and saw the Red-naped Sapsucker only once, for about 15 minutes at midday. A Red-breasted was on the tree on and off through the day, and it's there now at 7 pm - presumably only one. I don't know why the Red-naped spent so much less time in the yard today than yesterday. It's possible it is/was just moving through, but it was acting like a resident, spending hours making sap wells, I would never expect a migrant to do that. Perhaps it's just spending most of its time on eggs, but I have no idea at this time.

I'll be leaving town for nine days tomorrow, back on May 10, so no news from me. If anyone comes to the yard and sees the Red-naped, could you please post it on tweeters? The birds seem very tame, and you're welcome to come into the back yard and set up camp on the ground-floor deck.

A Barred Owl was hooting from the Thornton Creek ravine at about 6 pm. Single Orange-crowned and (Audubon's) Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Hermit Thrush and an unidentified Empidonax today were more migrants than I have seen in the yard previously this spring.
