I've been mourning the lack of swallow nests in our yard this year- the first year without any that I can remember. I also thought the vaux swifts were only using my chimney as a roost as I had seen and heard only occasional activity. But joy and rapture- today as I waited on the phone for a live person, I heard the distinctive thrumming of wings followed by an unmistakable chorus of begging voices. It seems unusually late but I'm not going to complain- just watch the skies with increased enthusiasm for signs of feeding and hopefully fledging .
