hi all ... Gene and I went out to the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for
White-tailed Deer on thursday ... had a gorgeous day !!! ... weather
was just perfect ... the loop around to Skamokawa is still washed out
with the turn-around spot being at the large gravel viewpoint west of
Hornstra Beach ... yesterday this spot provided REALLY CLOSE views of
Purple Martins ... the fledged youngsters were hanging around in the
trees alongside the road while mom and dad were bringing them bugs to
eat ... we also had lots of mud but the only shorebird found was a
Greater Yellowlegs ... came home with 25 species of birds, with four
of them new for us at that Refuge ... I'm now at 46 birds on my
JBHNWR list !!!! ... long ways to go before they hit my Ridgefield
Refuge list total, but then we generally only go to JBH once or twice
a year ... didn't see any deer at JBH this trip ...
