The very best birding in that area is Bolsa Chica Wetlands just north of
Huntington Beach. Watch the Herons/Egrets for the resident Reddish Egrets.

Also in Huntington Beach, visit Central Park. If you park at the library,
walk a block north to the butterfly/hummingbird fenced area. Nice place to
pick up Allen's Hummingbird.

I also bird San Elijo Lagoon, just south of Encinitas. Park at the visitor
center on Manchester.

Another popular place is Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. I usually drive
Back Bay Drive (one-way) to the NE, then check out the visitor center on the
north east corner along University Dr.

Finally, try Batiquitos Lagoon, just south of Carlsbad. I've birded both the
north side and the south side; both entrances are just a few blocks east of
I-5.

Do not miss Bolsa Chica.

I will be in the Newport Beach/Laguna Beach
California area for a few days next week and hope
to get in some birding on
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. I will have a car.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance Tweeterdom
can provide as to favorite spots in the area,
possible "birding friends" or other resources.
All I have is the James A Lane book from 1979 (I
hate being so old!!!)

Thanks for any help/suggestions
