My son and I?spent?Saturday afternoon (8/11)?seated under the osprey nest at the?Meadowdale softball complex in Lynnwood.? I don't believe the juvie has fledged, as it? was grooming itself the entire time we were there.? Looking at my photos, it appeared as though it? was shedding its baby down.? For the osprey experts in the audience:??must?a?baby osprey get rid of all?its baby down before it can attempt to fly?
?
At times it was difficult to keep track of?the resident osprey (papa/mama/junior)?in the nest?and perched in the nearby family tree?due to over flights by?intruders.? ?I witnessed?an?attack by the resident female against an intruding female.? I missed (by a fraction of a second) photographing the actual physical encounter, but I saw and heard the mid-air contact between the two osprey.? All adult osprey look alike to me; but from what I have seen, an osprey can distinguish between?its mate and intruders.
?
Not?far to the east (168th St. SW x 52nd Ave. W), the osprey which nest in a cell phone tower on?the?Dunn Lumber yard?definitely?hatched a baby this year.???It does not appear to be as old as the baby at the Meadowdale softball complex,?for it was barely sticking its head out of the nest?as I snapped photos.?? You can safely watch the nest from the back parking lot of Walgreens Drugs.
