Hmm... Maybe the habitat has deteriorated since I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca 1969-71. They are not in the housing area, etc, but up starting at the base of Huachuca Canyon and old cemetery/officers' housing; and on up into the canyon (oak habitat). They may have been attracted to the bird feeders in said officers' housing area. A rule of thumb would be to look for Mexican Jays where Acorn Woodpeckers are found in SE Arizona. Anyway, I never considered Mexican Jays to be out of the ordinary in proper habitat, and didn't pay all that much attention to them.

Thanks - never saw any down there and lived in Cochise county, especially Nicksville and Sierra Vista, but also Douglas, Bisbee, Ft Hauchuca, and Hauchaca city.

Yeah, commonly seen in the Huachuca Mountains (Fort Huachuca, Ramsay Canyon, etc); especially the oak and oak-pine belt.

Yup, that is a Mexican Jay...formerly called the Gray-breasted Jay.

Hi,
I was just checking the Arizona Highways Photo of the day and they have a blue and gray bird for today (13 August) and was wondering what the bird is.
