We drove to Leavenworth Monday morning, returned Tuesday evening.
Target birds: White Headed Woodpecker and Evening Grosbeak, my nemesis bird.

Two hours in 90plus weather at the fish hatchery, no WHWO. Checked out the Icicle Ridge Trailhead for WHWO-some birds but not the target birds. Drove to Upper Johnny Creek Campground in the afternoon for the EVENING GROSBEAKS EVERYWHERE-no birds.

Tuesday morning, stepping out of the KOA Kampground restroom, 15 feet ahead of me, a pair of WHWO. One was on the tree with a sign WOOD SPLITTING AREA. That guy had huge plans, I assume. Picture at: www.pbase.com/alndonna/image/145404630 . Click NEXT to see the close-up of the female.

We also stopped both times as we past Liberty, going 1/4 mile beyond town to the turnaround. Found birds eating sand on the road as predicted, but no EVGR-maybe we should had gone there in the EVENING.

PS I used my brand-new hearing aids for the first time. They put a new dimension on birding! Bought them at Costco, where you can return them during first 90 days for full refund. You?d be amazed how much they helped?I was.
