Hey tweets, birds seem to be moving everywhere in migration except the
Fill! My, it has been slow here this past week. On the other hand, if
you are patient and willing to work for them, some great birds can be
found. Most recent "goodies" so far in August:

8/1: early Yellow-rumped Warbler
8/4: Pacific Slope Flycatcher (a fall regular, but nice to see)
8/9: Chestnut-backed Chickadee (rare at the Fill, and my first ever
here! - only took 30 years)
8/10: Short-eared Owl (!)
8/11: American Bittern
8/13: 2 Band-tailed Pigeons (not that common at the Fill); Red-
breasted Nuthatch (also uncommon)
8/14: 2 male Purple Martins (first year I've ever seen all 7 of
Washington's swallows at the Fill); also, a Western, a Least, and a
Spotted Sandpiper on Main Pond

In other news: Steve Badanes (of Fremont Troll fame) had his design-
build architecture students construct a really beautiful shed to house
the Youth Farm's tools. The shed has benches to sit on, two water
drips, and (if we can raise a few bucks) a feeding station for birds.
I just got permission from the authorities to install a feeding
station at the shed. I was thinking of putting up two seed feeders and
two suet feeders a little later in the fall, when the birds' natural
foods begin to get scarce.

I need to raise about $100 to pay for two upside-down suet feeders and
one seed feeder (I'm donating one myself). I'll buy the first bag of
seed and see how it goes.

Any takers?

FYI, I do not plan to install a hummingbird feeder at this time, as I
don't want to commit to cleaning it as often as it should be cleaned.
If anyone out there is interested in taking on this project and can
service such a feeder regularly, please let me know. - Connie, Seattle
