While out on a trail run at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma this afternoon I
came eye-to-eye with a Barred Owl in the second-growth treed area just
south of the dog park on the south end of the park - just above the Salmon
Beach community. The owl looked at me, and I looked at it for a moment from
about 15 feet away before I reached for my phone to take a photo, and that
movement was enough to convince the bird to fly about 20 yards off the
trail and into the trees.

We have had Barred Owl in Point Defiance Park sporadically on Christmas
Bird Counts, including one bird last year, but this was definitely the best
look that I have had at this invasive species in Tacoma. I hear them more
than see them.

Happy birding!
