My father called me yesterday to relate that he hiked Mt. Pugh (Elev.
7201ft) this week and had a group of 6 White-Tailed Ptarmigan (mixed
adults and babies) near the top. He had Ptarmigans in the same spot
last year as well so it seems somewhat reliable for the species.
Unfortunately it is a rather difficult hike at 5.5 miles each way with
5300ft of elevation gain. I could only find 1 report on eBird of the
species in Snohomish County (Brandon Wagner, Glacier Peak, 2007-09-20)
and nothing in searching Tweeters archives so I thought it was worth
mentioning.

I've hiked Evergreen Mt. (Elev. 5591ft) and Mt. Dickerman (Elev.
5723ft) this summer and did not find Ptarmigan, or any other high
altitude species, in either place.

He also related that he's had a large increase in (Presumably Sooty)
grouse sitings this year over previous years, encountering nearly
every place he hikes.
