A short report for Ocean shores- Tokeland birding.
We started at Hoquiam stp.
Easily saw AMERICAN AVOCET,LEAST andWESTERN SANDPIPERS,KILLDEER.
Also osprey, many brown pelicans, herrman gulls.canada geese.caspian terns,barn and new swallows
Next stop Tonquin ,Oyehut game range.
A birding spectacle of shore birds!!
Weather very windy and raining.
We added STILT SANDPIPERS,SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SHORT & LONGBILLED DOWITCHER,GREATED &LESSER YELLOWLEGS,PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
Also noted 1 greater white fronted goose.
Rain and frozen fingers drove us out.
At Point brown was a FRENZY of pelicans ,murres,sooty shearwaters,gulls like we have never seen.!
On the jetty were SURFBIRD,WANDERING TATTLER ,RUDDY TURNSTONE. Nearby we're SANDERLING.
On to Tokeland, bypassed Bottle Beach till tides would be higher.
In driving wind and rain,at graveyard spit LONGBILLED CURLEW&WHIMBREL.
at the dock area were MARBLE GODWIT &WILLET.
Later with tide comming in at Bottle beach, were hundreds of MARBLED GODWITS.
One smaller fresh brown one revealed itself to be HUDSONIAN GODWIT when they all flew.
Also 1 DUNLIN,REDKNOT,BLACKBELLIED PLOVER.
Monday am.sunshine and calme
Westport jetty added BLACKTURNSTONE.
cranberry beach road at grayland:
walking about 1/2 mile south ,we saw 16 SNOWY PLOVERS.They were nearer to. The shoreline than other times but in old car ruts getting some sun.
Back at Oyehut we looked again for the BUFF BREASTED SAND ,no luck.
However. With better conditions we found SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, BAIRDS SANDPIPER & 2 DistantPACIFIC? GOLDEN PLOVERS in the grass. They kindly revealed solid dark underwings when they took off.
The spectacle of flight and frenzy was incredible when a young dark peregrine repeatedly zoomed after the multitudes of western,least sands,dowicthers, sp plover.
Seeing that alone is worth a trip.
Unfortunately never found the Buff ...
Our 27 hour total was 29 SHOREBIRD SPECIES ,a new high number for us there.
A great time to go shorebirding ! also lots of friendly knowledgeable birders out there.many equipment laden or loaded individuals.
