Michael,

This is a Dusky Grouse. (Yes, Michael, I?ve been to that exact location!)

In Okanogan County, Sooty Grouse are found only in a narrow band a few miles wide in the extreme west end of the county-- next to the Cascade Crest. Everywhere else in the county (i.e. 99% of the county), they are replaced by Dusky Grouse.

Sooty Grouse do occur east of the Cascades in much of Washington, but not until you get well to the south of Lake Chelan (mostly in Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat Counties). There is a rather narrow zone of overlap and hybridization.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

Here's a link to a pic of a grouse I posted on a Flickr ID Help group with no conclusive results. I took the photo at Beaver Pond near Sun Mountain Lodge outside Winthrop. I'm sure many out there are familiar with the location. The bird was calmly perched on a log in the shade of aspens within 50 feet of the pond. Any input will be appreciated!
