Dear Tweeters,
?
Birding was so good at Lyman (Skagit County) this morning (31 August 2012)?that I decided to try for a century day. I just barely made it--I think I found
100 or maybe as many as 102 species. I missed some birds that should've been easy, and found some pretty cool ones.
?
Here are a few highlights.
?
Osprey--one at Nichols Bar, one at Ship Harbor (the latter near the nest site).
?
California Quail--I lucked out when one flew up onto a bush as I approached Washington Park.
?
Shorebirds==16 species!
--Killdeer
--BB Plover, just a few at Jensen Access
--Semipalmated Plover, one each at Lyman and Jensen
--Wilson's Snipe--eleven at Lyman, one at Jensen
--SB Dowitcher, just one at Hayton Preserve
--Black Turnstone, one on the beach along March Point's eastern shoreline
--Greater Yellowlegs here and there
--Lesser Yellowlegs--ditto
--Solitary Sandpiper, one at Lyman
--Spotted Sandpiper, one at Channel Drive
--Pectoral Sandpiper, good numbers at Lyman and Jensen
--Sanderling, at least three at March Point, with Westerns
--Western Sandpipers, good numbers here and there
--Least Sandpipers, a few here and there
--Semipalmated Sandpiper, one with the big Western flock at March Point
--Red-necked Phalarope, one at Channel Drive
?
Black Swift, one at Nichols Bar, with Vaux's
?
Rufous Hummer, one at Northern State
?
Anna's Hummer, one at Ship Harbor
?
PS Flycatcher, one at Lyman
?
Willow Flycatcher, one still "whitting" at the Game Range
?
Purple Martin, three at Ship Harbor
?
Bank Swallow, several at Lyman
?
NRW Swallow, ditto
?
Hutton's Vireo, one at Green Point
?
Townsend's Warbler, one at Nichols Bar
?
BTG Warbler, several each at Lyman and Nichols Bar
?
Wilson's Warbler, a few at Nichols Bar
?
Orange-crowned Warbler, one each at Nichols Bar and Ship Harbor
?
Lincoln's Sparrow, two each at Lyman and Northern State
?
Western Tanagers, two at Northern State, migrants I think
?
Evening Grosbeak, heard calling at Lyman
?
Red Crossbill, a few at Washington Park.
?
I somehow missed Common Merganser, Accipiters, Falcons, Baird's Sandpiper, Heermann's Gull, Northern Flicker, Cliff Swallow, Tree Swallow, and BH Grosbeak, so it could've been quite a day!
?
Yours truly,
?
