Suzanne, The bird sees the reflection of the background in the glass and thinks they can fly right through . I too have a lot of glass windows at my house and had the sad experience of finding birds outside which hit the windows and were either killed or stunned. You?might try ?window clings which look like?a spider web and stick it on your glass. The bird sees the web and will not try to fly through. You can check your local bird stores for purchasing them. Since?I put them ?on my windows, I have not had a hit in those areas

You could also put up a sun catcher or two to help them see that something is there too.

I know how you feel,

Kind regards,

Beth Thompson

Subject: [Tweeters] Varied Thrush Flew Into Our Door

I lurk and don't post often on this list, but enjoy the posts. I thought I'd share a recent, disturbing event with a group of fellow bird-lovers - it's still bothering me!

We have glass front and back doors on our log house. I have bird feeders and a bird bath in front of the house. Last Sunday, we heard this loud "bang" and thought one of the cats knocked over a box upstairs. I looked all around and didn't see a thing. Then, when I went by the porch, I looked out and there was this beautiful, but dead, Varied Thrush. Obviously, s/he had flown into the door at amazing speed. I believe its neck was broken; it was definitely dead and not just stunned. It still had seeds in its mouth from our feeder.?

I love when the Varied Thrushes arrive in the winter; we live in the woods on Bainbridge Island and they usually show up when it's unusually cold in the mountains. Such a gorgeous bird.

Anyway, thanks for listening/reading. I think I needed to share this with other bird lovers; it's on my mind and in my heart. We haven't had any other birds fly into our doors/windows in the 5 years we've been here. Maybe it's time to get some of those stickers on our door...

Suzanne
