Hello, tweets.

Netta Smith and I saw two female-plumaged Pine Grosbeaks on the easternmost trail through Reifel Waterfowl Refuge, near Ladner, BC, on 3 December. I just remembered that I wanted to post this for the record, as the species wasn't listed in recent weeks at the refuge. They were feeding on crab apples, which are common there. We also saw robins, an Evening Grosbeak, Song and Golden-crowned Sparrows and Spotted Towhees (both coastal and interior subspecies) feeding on them. Reifel is really a great place to go for close looks at lots of birds, cranes in the parking lot, chickadees feeding from your hand, Mallards chasing you down the trail, lots of good photo ops (not so much when the black clouds are hanging above), and always the chance of something unusual.
