Come on one of my night hikes with the owls, Avens and Inocybes! I am
leading them again. I don't have another day job so I do ask for
contributions to my "cause". I am leading them on both this Friday
and Saturday nights. This Friday the walk is from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. It
still has more slots and will likely have a higher ratio of adults.
The Saturday walk is from 6:30 - 8:30 pm and may have a few more kids
than Friday night, but I always make sure that the walks are more
adult oriented, while having them work well for kids too.

While we will be sure to look for the owls, and sure to find their
"whitewash", pellets and feathers, I would only give us a 55% chance
of actually seeing or hearing the Barred Owls there. I would say we
will have a 95% chance of having an enjoyable and informative time. I
will demonstrate my hoots, but these owls now know my voice and are
not so responsive as they once were.

While the owls are always the top draw, as we walk the park I will be
pointing out plants, fungi, lichens, and any other animal kingdom
members there too. (we're now getting one of the best fungus
fruitings for December, thus the "Inocybe" in my headline above) I
will give a running commentary on the diversity of organisms around
us, their stories and ecology. I have studied the full diversity of
these organisms quite intensely, and for over 12 years in Lincoln
Park. If the stars come out, we'll take a look at them, and point out
a constellation or two too!
