Today, December 7, 2012, Michael Barry & I ventured out to Neah Bay and
Cape Flattery.The weather, although "cold" to this Florida boy, was mostly
rain-free but windy.At Neah Bay, near the Mini-Mart, we found over 200
Western Grebes. In among them was one orange-billed Clark's Grebe! No doubt
about it. However, the biggest surprise at this location was a rapid flyby
Barn Swallow. With all the recent sightings of white-bellied/breasted Barn
Swallow types, I can't really say if this particular BASW was white-bellied
or not, but it definitely was a Barn Swallow. Also seen, and photographed
there were a few Thayer's Gulls. Other nice birds were a half-dozen
Bonaparte's Gulls, at least three Brown Pelicans, White-winged & Surf
Scoters, Black Turnstones, Black Oystercatchers, Red-throated & Common
Loons, cormorants, grebes, ducks, etc., etc. At the Waatch River, we saw a
Northern Shrike and 7 Trumpeter Swans on the river. At Hobuck Beach were
saw a dozen or so Red Crossbills. The hoped for Black Kittiwakes at Cape
Flattery didn't materialize but Michael saw a few distant Sooty
Shearwaters. All in all, a good day in extreme NW Washington . . . .
