Hi Tweeters,

Becky Kent and I saw a number of waterfowl species in Cowlitz County today
(12/8/12) that can be tough to find here. There were 12 RUDDY DUCKS at the
Longview STP. The slough west of the 38th Ave/Prudential Blvd intersection
in Longview held a male CINNAMON TEAL, a surprise winter find.

The Columbia River at the Woodland Bottoms had a male RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER north of the RV park and a RED-NECKED GREBE south of the RV park.
Also in the vicinity of the RV park was a PACIFIC LOON.

Including sightings at Willow Grove, mouth of the Kalama River, and
Woodland Bottoms we had an unusually high count of 8 RED-THROATED LOONS
with 2 more on the Clark County side of the Lewis River. The Columbia in
Cowlitz also held 3 COMMON LOONS.

An immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen along Guild Road east of Robinson
Rd in the Woodland Bottoms and we finished around 4 PM with a SHORT-EARED
OWL in flight and then on the ground at the end of Guild Rd.
