The recent appearance of a Brambling in Birch Bay has produced renewed interest in birding on the Lummi Flats. Snow Buntings are on rare occasions present in the area.

Birders should keep in mind that venturing out onto the ?aquaculture dike?, the dike that goes out into salt water and is accessed from the corner of Hillaire and Kwina roads, is STRICTLY prohibited by the Lummi Tribe. Doing so, in addition to some possible personal inconvenience, can result in still greater restrictions on birding on tribal property.

At present, if the birder has written permission, then birding is permitted in the area out to the base of the aquaculture dike but NOT onto the dike itself. A ?Letter of Permission? is attainable on weekdays during office hours at the Lummi Planning Department at the nearby corner of Kwina and Haxton Roads.

The road out to the base of the aquaculture dike is not signed or gated. As for many dirt and gravel roads in undeveloped areas throughout the state the lack of a sign is not necessarily to be taken as an indication of freedom of access.
