I spent a week or so after Christmas, birding in Klickitat County, trying
to finish out my Bird-A-Day year. I saw over 85 species in that county,
including some birds I hadn't seen since 1998 when I did MY Big Year.
Highlights: 3 species of nuthatches: Red-breasted, White-breasted & Pygmy;
3 species of Chickadees: Mountain, Chestnust-sided and Black-capped; 8
species of woodpeckers: White-headed, Lewis's, Acorn, Downy, Hairy,
Pileated, Red-shafted Northern Flicker & Red-naped Sapsucker; Gray
Partridge, Lesser Goldfinch, Barrow's Goldeneye, Prairie Falcon, Northern
Shrike, Western Bluebird, Black-billed Magpie, House Wren(!), Slate-colored
(Cassiar's) Dark-eyed Junco, RedCrossbill and so many more. Beautiful area
along the Columbia River Gorge as well as the area around Mt. Adams! I
stayed at the Bingen School (Columbia River) Hostel. Basic accommodations
but suited me just fine and the price was right! Stuart Johnston is a
skilled birder and cool guy! Bird on in 2013!
