Tweets - late this afternoon, my wife and I took a walk on the trails off
Cold Creek Parkway near Factoria, King Co. The trail goes up a ravine that
is predominantly Big Leaf Maple and cedars, with a few hemlocks and very few
Doug Firs. Up at the top, throw in some alders and a cottonwood or two. We
saw most of the usual suspects - Song Sparrow, both kinglets, Hairy
Woodpecker, Pacific Wren, etc.

Just before 5:30, I spotted a BROWN CREEPER actively foraging on a
moss-covered maple. It then flew over my head, where Janka saw there was a
second bird. There were lots of their little contact calls between them.
Then, suddenly, they both climbed into a hole that was old workings of a
Pileated Woodpecker in a maple snag. As I peered into that hole, I could
see one of the creepers snuggle into the soft rotting wood inside the hole.
It even stuffed it's beak into the soft wood. Then the bird was silent and
motionless; apparently that was their night roost spot. It looked pretty
cosy, warm, and secure in there.

Oh, and a few minutes later, we got to spot where the trail overlooks the
stream, and I heard singing. Peering down, I was able to see a singing
AMERICAN DIPPER.

A nice way to end the day.
