Ruth Sullivan and I were enjoying a mixed flock of Cedar and Bohemian
Waxwings today on Washburn Island in Okanogan County when several of our
Washington Ornithological Society field trips members enjoyed the booming
of a "Blue" presumably Dusky Grouse. A crescendo-decrescendo series of
four booms. At first our group speculated we might be hearing an American
Bittern or Roughed Grouse, but after repeated calls, and listening quietly
to digital recordings we concluded we were hearing a Dusky Grouse
identified primarily by vocalization and location. As west side birders,
we were surprised to hear this call so close to Lake Pateros. More details
on our Okanogan Highlands and Waterville Plateau trip to be written up soon.
