About a week ago I did the Hakalau Wildlife Refuge trip with Hawaii Forest and Trail. Gary also led our group, and he was great. We found about the same number of birds as George.
The trip was well organized and run. I highly recommend it.

My wife and I took?the Hawaii Forest & Trail store Rain/Dry Forest Tour yesterday.?We haven't taken many tours but can't imagine being more satisfied than with this one.?We went to two areas and saw about 2 dozen species including 9 endemics, 3 endangered (Akiapola'au, Palila & I'o). Gary, our guide, was very well informed and professional.
I haven't tried it yet, but you might checkout Birding Pals that offers?the possiblity of making connections with local birders (for gas, lunch, etc)??as well as a couple of tours for day trips.
