I
read with interest the discussion recently on Niger feeders. Though I agree
with the concern over the rot and mold that may occur in this climate and the
fact that there is ample feed for the Pine Siskin in the area; I do like to
attract the Gold Finch. Here is what I am doing. Using a clear plastic tube
feeder with small slits for the Niger seed. This reduces the rain getting in.
Filling it only partly full to save on seed. I found a neat feeder that selects
for the Gold Finch. Requires them to hang up side down. Example: http://www.birdfeeders.com/store/wild-bird-feeders/399 To reduce the problem of moisture in this climate I hang the feeder under a
plastic squirrel guard that reduces the problem with rain. Example: http://www.duncraft.com/common/images/products/main/5058_300.jpg I also have it hanging under a tree that reduces the sideways rain that we get
at times. Plus I change the feed every few weeks, and clean the feeder with
soap and a little chlorine in the water; just in case.? So far so good.
