Spent a glorious afternoon with the snowy owls at Damon Point State Park yesterday (Sunday). Despite the weather report, from 2:00 to sunset it was sunny and not too cold. There were maybe 12-15 of us out there, about half of them photographers taking advantage of the opportunity.

I wandered around a bit before finding the area where the owls like to hang out before hunting in the evening. There is a "don't disturb the snowy owls" sign at the edge of this area. There is a paved road that transects this area, don't be fooled and go down this road. Stay between the beach and the "rise". Mostly, they like to sit on various pieces of driftwood of varying heights.

I have posted a marked up map of the park with approximate boundary where the snowy owls were hanging out yesterday. Hard to tell how many individuals we were seeing because they would fly around and land in different spots, but the count was at least 4, i.e., that was the number of individuals I could account for at one time.

The owls are very cooperative and will sit there for extended periods of time for scope viewing or photography. Don't miss this opportunity, it is well worth the 3 hour drive. They will leave "in March", but I don't know if that is this week or a month from now. This was one of my favorite WA birding trips ever.

There are no (bathroom) facilities that I could find near or in the park so get your bladder well drained before walking out. I'd guesstimate it's at least 3/4's of a mile walk to the snowy owl area.

P.S. Looks like great short-eared owl territory, but did not see a single one. Perhaps the snowy owls chase them out?
